The chlorine sanitizes the water and then converts back to salt — and the cycle repeats automatically.
The result is a pool that produces its own chlorine continuously at a low, steady level, rather than being manually dosed in larger amounts on a schedule. That difference in delivery is what creates most of the practical distinctions between the two systems.
Why Saltwater Makes Sense for Florida Specifically
Florida’s climate is hard on pool chemistry. Year-round sunshine, high UV intensity, heat, humidity, heavy summer rainstorms, and near-constant swimmer use all put pressure on chlorine levels. Here’s why a saltwater system handles those conditions better than manual chlorination in most cases:
Consistent chlorine levels
Florida’s intense sun burns off chlorine rapidly — UV exposure can deplete a chlorine pool’s sanitizer levels significantly within hours on a hot summer day. With manual chlorination, this means frequent testing and dosing to prevent the pool from going under-chlorinated, which is when algae and bacteria take hold. A salt system produces chlorine continuously, compensating for that ongoing burn-off automatically. The result is more stable water chemistry with less manual intervention.
Year-round use means year-round maintenance
Unlike homeowners in northern states who close their pools for 4–5 months and open them again in spring, Jacksonville pool owners swim year-round. That means 12 months of chemical management instead of 7. The lower maintenance burden of a saltwater system adds up significantly when you’re managing a pool 365 days a year rather than seasonally.

Upfront cost
A saltwater system does cost more upfront. A quality salt chlorine generator — we typically install Pentair equipment on our builds — adds approximately $1,500–$3,000 to the equipment package compared to a standard chlorination setup. This is a one-time cost at the time of construction, and for a new build it’s a relatively small addition to the overall project budget.
Ongoing costs
Where saltwater systems tend to make up the upfront difference over time is in ongoing chemical costs. Traditional chlorine pools require regular purchases of chlorine tablets, liquid chlorine, shock treatments, and stabilizer. A saltwater pool still needs occasional supplemental chemicals — pH adjusters, stabilizer (cyanuric acid), algaecide as needed — but the core sanitizer cost is dramatically reduced because the system produces its own chlorine from inexpensive pool salt.

Saltwater isn’t the right answer for every situation. Here’s when a traditional chlorine setup may be worth considering:
Tighter upfront budget: If the additional $1,500–$3,000 for a salt system meaningfully strains your project budget, a traditional chlorine pool is a perfectly sound choice. You can always add a salt system later, though it’s easier and cheaper to include it during the initial build.
Pools with a lot of stone or natural features: Saltwater is mildly corrosive over time and can accelerate deterioration of certain natural stones, metals, and some grout types if water chemistry isn’t carefully maintained. For pools with extensive natural travertine, certain tile types, or decorative metal features, this is worth discussing with your builder.
Preference for direct control: Some experienced pool owners prefer the flexibility of manually dosing chlorine, particularly if they’re dealing with heavy bather loads, frequent parties, or specific water chemistry situations that benefit from rapid adjustment. Traditional chlorine allows you to respond more aggressively and quickly to chemistry swings than a salt system, which produces chlorine at a steady rate it doesn’t rapidly increase on demand.
What About Mineral Systems and Other Alternatives?
You may have heard of mineral sanitizer systems (such as Nature2 or Frog) or UV/ozone systems that are sometimes marketed as alternatives to chlorine. These are typically used as supplements to either a salt or traditional chlorine system — they reduce the amount of chlorine needed but don’t eliminate it entirely. They’re worth knowing about but aren’t a true alternative to choosing between saltwater and traditional chlorine for your primary sanitization system.
